IMG_6008

Bearded gentleman.

Has this ever happened to you?

You’re hanging out with your significant other.

Great conversations and laughter are ensuing.

You move in for a little kiss and you hear them…

“Ouch, your beard hurts”

BUZZKILL…

“Prickly beard syndrome” has been destroying enjoyable moments in men’s lives for far too long

It’s time to put a stop to it.

Whether you have a beard, want a beard, or are trying to grow a beard, these 4 steps can help you control and soften your mane.

So the question(s) is/are:

  • How do you properly maintain a beard?
  • What are the product recommendations?

These two questions plague many gents who are contemplating growing facial hair. It can be confusing and overwhelming, I know. So let me show you how.

1. Exfoliate To Remove Unwanted Particles

Exfoliate your skin and pre-clean your beard.

A facial cleanser with exfoliating beads are great for your beard, but sometimes it’s not quite enough. Dead skin and other particles can get lodged in pretty tight, requiring a little more attention.

I recommend having a boar bristle brush to rid your beard of dead skin cells and help stimulate and rejuvenate the surface. The bristles of this brush are soft as opposed to synthetic bristles so they won’t scratch your face.

The surface of each bristle is scaly and draws dust and excess product from the hair as you use it which helps pre-clean each follicle.

2. Shampoo Your Beard Gently

scotchporter-beardwash_1024x1024Frequency: 2-3 times a week

As men, we have a tendency to be heavy handed and rough.

It’s necessary to wash our beard gently as we want to prevent excessive tugging and pulling. That can weaken your hair and lead to thinning over time.

When washing, make sure you are lathering the shampoo in a circular motion. This will guarantee that your skin is getting extra stimulation to keep the pours open. This is great for rehydration.

A circular motion also ensures that the whole follicle is getting nourished and cleaned.

NOTE: Make sure you know what kind of hair you have. If your hair is naturally dry you want to use a hydrating shampoo. If you have oily hair, which often holds product more, then you might want to use a clarifying shampoo which strips the hair of harsh oils.

3. Condition Your Beard Adequately

scotchporter-beardconditioner_grandeFrequency: 2-3 times a week (as often as you shampoo)

A conditioner is used for placing nutrients such as botanical oils, vitamin B-5, shea butter, and aloe vera juice to nourish your mane.

When conditioning, make sure that your hair is wet and let the conditioner sit on your face for 3-5 minutes. This will allow the conditioner to fully be soaked up.

Another reason for the conditioner is to keep your beard soft and manageable. After you condition your beard you can add a beard softener if you like to ensure that the texture of your hair remains the kind that that special someone can and will appreciate.

4. Tame The Mane!

Frequency: As needed

Taming your beard requires attention. It involves one or all of the following things:

  • Cutting
  • Trimming
  • Edging
  • Brushing
  • Combing

It’s necessary to do one or all of these to train your hair, create volume, and maintain the shape of you beard.

TIP: When shaping your beard, a hair or beard conditioner will suffice in place of shaving cream as a blade protectant (If using a manual razor).

NOTE: When brushing or combing, pull the brush or comb in the natural direction that your hair grows. This will minimize tangling and pulling. It also can help with preventing painful and unsightly ingrown hairs.

5. Smooth Your Beard To Perfection

Frequency: Daily

If your beard hairs still look and feel like wires (like mine), sometimes it takes more than just conditioner to soften it fully.

This is where magical step number 5 comes in.

Smoothing your beard is simple. It can be done by applying beard balm and/or a smoothing beard serum. This product will leave your beard moisturized, frizz-free, shiny, and smooth. It seals in the moisture and ensures that the hair cuticle (outer part of the hair shaft) is smooth.

Jagged hair cuticles can lead to split ends and frizzy hair. A beard serum or any other smoothing product will help prevent this from happening.

What To Look For In Beard Care Products

Products that use natural oils, roots and vitamins are a preferred. Argan oil is a must.

Additionally, the products should ideally be free of sulfate, parabens, petroleum, and silicones.

In Summary

If great hair is a must then the beard falls right in line with that sentiment. Use these steps to create and maintain a marvelous, manageable, and healthy beard.

  • Exfoliate
  • Wash
  • Condition
  • Tame
  • Smooth
