They came up with an epic idea to start a movement for the benefit of men’s health.
Fast forward to the present, The Movember Foundation has funded 832 men’s health projects worldwide.
This is a month that men can claim.
What is Movember?
Movember is the a time when the dying mustache trend gets brought back to life for 30 days in the name of men’s health.
But why the mustache?
Well it simply works as an icebreaker to start a conversation.
The mustache was trending about 20 years ago, so now when someone sees you rocking an epic stache, the only thing to do is talk about it!
It also sparks a conversation about the issues that the general public may be blind to.

Before we get into grooming your mustache, let’s talk about the different types of mustaches you can grow.

4 Steps To Grooming Your Mustache
Let’s talk preparations.
If you’re just starting to grow a mustache, these tips will be good for you to simultaneously grow your mustache while keeping your beard shaved.
There are several problems you can run into while shaving.
The most common problems I see are cutting your face, skin irritation, dryness and skin cracking, razor burns, and ingrown hairs.

Step 1: Wash Your Face Well
Before beginning your shave the most important thing you can do is thoroughly wash your face.
It clears up any dead skin cells, dirt, and grime build up on the skin and in your pores.
Exfoliation also helps the blades flow gently over the skin.
Another HUGE benefit of facial cleansers is that they soften the protein of your hair follicles so the blade can run smoothly through your hair and not get caught on tough patches.
If left unwashed, these issues could cause you to shave unevenly and potentially cut yourself.

It is packed with natural ingredients like volcanic ash, kaolin clay, oatmeal, and vitamin E to dive deep into your pores and remove all the built up dirt.
Step 2: Prep The Shave Correctly
The Pre-Shave Oil
Have you ever completed a shave and felt that burning sensation from water, or fragrance sprays afterwards? This is from razor burn.
Failure to lubricate the skin prior to shaving can lead to skin irritation.
Since your skin isn’t genetically designed for sharp blades to slide over it, high quality lubrication is extremely important.
The benefits of pre-shaving oil include:
Adding a lubricating coat for the razor to slide over
Softening the beard and skin
Hydration AFTER exfoliation
My personal favorite pre-shave lotion is the Sandal Wood Pre Shave Oil from The Art Of Shaving.
The sandalwood provides beard softening benefits, along with skin revitalizing essential oils.
The Shaving Cream
Pairing your pre-shave oil with a shaving cream is helpful because it is used in action, and not just prior to.
It keeps the razor wet during the shave making it easier to slide through the beard.
I highly recommend The Supreme Cream from Jack Black.
The macademia nut oil and jojoba oil are the perfect lubrication to add to the razor while shaving.
Stay away from condensed shaving cream in a can. These have terrible ingredients that can potentially harm your skin in the long run.
Step 3: Choose The Right Razor
Manual or Electric?
Which do you think is better?
While the electric does offer a quicker shave, it does not shave as closely or smoothly to the skin, and is more likely to lead to irritation and ingrown hairs.
As with everything in life, there are no shortcuts. Go with the manual.
It might take a little bit longer but what you lose in the 1-2 minutes of shaving, you pick up in quality and smoothness.
Not to mention the manual razor works better with all the pre-shave prep you just did.
My personal recommendation? Harry’s Razors.

How To Shave Correctly
A contributing factor to all of the problems mentioned above are also due to poor shaving technique.
3 Ways to Shave Correctly
- Shave in the Same Direction as your Hair Growth – Shaving againsts the grain of the hairs is a formula for burns and skin irritation. Follow the natural pattern of your hair growth. The chin is the problem area for most new shavers. Make sure to hit that part last so the cream has time to soften the rough hair.
- Machine Gun Approach – Use short strokes repeatedly to achieve the smoothest shave. Long strokes leave room for error and patches missed.
- Rinse & Repeat – Every 3-6 strokes your hair and cream builds up in the blades. Rinse it off with hot water and continue.
Step 4: Moisturize
Last but not least, you need to moisturize your skin with a high quality after shave lotion.
After a shave, the skin can still be a little bit irritated. One of the biggest benefits from lotion is the cooling sensation that you feel. It cures any burns you may have had.
Another benefit is the scent. You don’t need to mix a fragrance with it because aftershave usually smells great!
Of course, it also moisturizes your face so there is no dryness or skin cracking.
Don’t over do the aftershave though. It can be overwhelming to people you pass by if there is too much.

While caring for your skin is extremely important, it is important to remember the reason behind Movember, to raise awareness for men’s health issues that get overlooked.
